Ol Doinyo Lengai
Night ascent of the Maasai 'Mountain of God', an active volcano above Lake Natron.
Ol Doinyo Lengai (2,962 m) is the only active carbonatite volcano on earth and a sacred mountain to the Maasai. The climb begins around midnight so you stand on the crater rim as the sun rises over Lake Natron.
The ascent is steep, loose and demanding — five to six hours up on volcanic ash and hardened lava flows. Good fitness and steady nerves are essential; our guides set a careful pace with regular rest stops.
We base climbs from Lake Natron, where you can add flamingo walks, the Engare Sero waterfalls and the 120,000-year-old human footprints preserved in the mudflats.
