Mount Meru rises inside Arusha National Park and is climbed in three or four days, accompanied by an armed ranger through the lower forest where buffalo and elephant are common.
The knife-edge summit ridge at dawn, with Kilimanjaro floating above the clouds to the east, is one of the finest mountain views in Africa.
Many climbers use Meru as acclimatisation before Kilimanjaro, leaving two or three rest days between the two.
